Do children travel free?
Infants aged 5 and under travel free *. Those aged 5 to 16 pay the Child rate.
*Except Santa Specials. On Santa Specials children up to and including 2 years old (who do not require a gift or visit from Santa) can travel free of charge providing they are accompanied by another fare paying child and adults! Please note that they will not be allocated a seat.
I don’t have a PayPal account, how do I purchase tickets online?
PayPal is simply the provider we have chosen to facilitate our payments. Underneath the PayPal button there is a “Debit or Credit Card” button.
I no longer want the tickets I purchased, what can I do?
Tickets are not refundable but may be transferred to another date, depending on availability. No refunds will be given for missed trains.
I’ve not received any notification after ordering online…
If you have not received notification of any tickets purchased, please check your spam or junk email folder first before getting in touch with us.
Can we get on or off at Greenrigg Halt?
Yes you can. Greenrigg Halt is now fully open. You have the option to purchase return tickets and come back on the train you travelled down in, or delay your return journey and come back on a later train. You can also purchase single tickets.
Travelling on the train
Are dogs allowed on the train?
Well behaved dogs are normally allowed on the train, but we ask they are kept off the seats. They are not allowed in some compartments, which are clearly marked. For the comfort of others, we ask only one dog per adult is permitted on our trains.
On certain special event days, such as Santa Specials, dogs may not be permitted (with the exception of assistance dogs).
How long does the journey take?
The return journey takes around 30-45 minutes.
How far does the train go?
The train travels down to Greenrigg Halt, which is just over a mile away from Lionheart.
Are there toilets on the train?
Sorry, no. Our rolling stock is mainly 1950’s vintage, which are designed to deposit the toilet waste onto the track. As we have a footpath alongside most of the line, it’s not possible to allow their use. Toilets are available at Lionheart Station.
Helping Us
How can I help?
There are a number of ways you can help, including volunteering, joining as a member, donating, leaving a legacy.
Do I need special skills to volunteer?
No! Just heaps of enthusiasm!
We have roles for everyone, whatever your skills. Sadly, you can’t become a train driver overnight – that needs your commitment and time for us to train you to the standards required, but you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills or hone existing ones.
I have a disability, will that prevent me from volunteering?
Of course not! Certain physical or hidden disabilities may restrict you from certain roles, particularly safety critical ones, but we’ll do our best to accommodate you and give you the opportunity to volunteer. Carers are most welcome too.
